]]> Eat, Pray, Love - Here are the essentials of life rolled into one very beautiful and articulate woman’s journey. She shares personal stories in ways that make them universal and provides descriptions of life events large and small that make us realize how universal our experience actually is. Her personal search and moments of peace reminded me of my own, I only wished that I had been able to be as articulate as she is, page after page on what it is to experience the world and come up loving and believing.

My one qualm with the book is that as with so much of our contemporary literature, this hero’s journey is the personal discoveries that occur after she leaves her marriage. There are more stories than I can count that share this common theme- that it is through the courage of leaving and finding oneself that life opens itself to us.

I want to write this same story about the heroic journey of staying. How do we keep loving and finding ourselves in the face of the commitments and promises that are harder to keep than we ever imagined. How do we find the peace and quiet of our souls in the midst of raising children and holding jobs that make a difference to our community. How do we apply the lessons of self love in a way that embraces and strengthens more than just ourselves? All rhetorical questions- ones that get asked and answered bit by bit with each dinner we prepare even when were not hungry, or one more interrupted night’s sleep by our partner’s snores or child’s cry.

A must read by Elizabeth Gilbert- and look for my version sometime in this century.
